Jazz organist, trumpeter, saxophonist, and occasionally singer Joey DeFrancesco made headlines for his remarkable transformation.

He put out more than 30 albums under his name and did a ton of sideman work with jazz greats, including guitarist John McLaughlin, saxophonist Houston Person, and trumpeter Miles Davis. Then, at 16, DeFrancesco obtained his first record deal.

Since then, he has worked with many artists, including Ray Charles, Bette Midler, Janis Siegel, Diana Krall, Jimmy Cobb, David Sanborn, Larry Coryell, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, and many others.

Joey secured an exclusive recording deal with Columbia Records when he was 16. He launched his debut record, All of Me, the following year. It has been claimed that his work on All of Me was instrumental in reintroducing the organ to jazz compositions in the 1980s.

He joined McLaughlin and drummer Dennis Chambers as founding members of the band The Free Spirits when he was 22. He participated in various recordings, including the albums Tokyo Live and After the Rain, and toured with the group for four years.

DeFrancesco is also acknowledged for playing the trumpet on the Tokyo Live record. DeFrancesco filmed Incredible! Live at the San Francisco Jazz Festival for his CD that same year. Jimmy Smith, DeFrancesco’s idol, performed two songs with him on the album.
