Ali Siddiq filmed his first hour-long Comedy Central special inside the Bell County Jail. The special, titled “It’s Bigger Than These Bars,” aired at 10 p.m. CST on Feb. 23. Siddiq had a half-hour special on the network in 2016.
Siddiq began doing comedy as an inmate himself — inside the Texas state penitentiary system. While serving six years of a 15-year drug trafficking sentence, he found a love for making others laugh.
This special puts him back in a cell block, doing stand-up for inmates and conducting interviews with both prisoners and staff at the Bell County Jail. The Bell County Sheriff’s Office said the special painted the facility in a positive light.
The Comedy Central show included footage of Siddiq re-telling stories of his own experiences behind bars and inspiring local prisoners.

The first season will consist of 11 episodes: 10 regular episodes and an additional results episode for the finale. Judges for the series include Kenan Thompson, Chrissy Teigen, and Jeff Foxworthy.
The Open Mic round features 40 contestants with 10 acts per episode. The judges then selected six out of the 10 acts to move onto the Comedy Clash.
Siddiq faced some tough crowds on his way to the finale of NBC’s comedy competition series Bring the Funny, airing Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. We’re not talking about smoky nightclubs and boorish hecklers. No, Siddiq cut his comedic teeth in prison.
Now he’s made it through the semi-final showcase of the hit show and he’s ready to bring the funny for all the marbles. Not bad for a guy who honed his craft during six years behind bars on a fifteen-year sentence for cocaine trafficking.
Once he got out, Siddiq became a touring comedian; he has appeared on Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime and AXS. He’s also a philanthropist.
For the last 10 years, he has helped feed the homeless with the Houston Food Bank through his Jive Turkeys Comedy Show.
