The gruesome murder of a black teenager on 23rd April 1993, sparked a huge uproar of rage and reactions from anti-racist advocacy and campaign groups in the UK.
Stephen Lawrence was waiting at a bus stop with his friend Duwayne Brooks when a group of young, white boys attacked them. Whiles Brooks was able to escape unhurt, Lawrence bled to death due to several knife wounds he sustained after being stabbed severally by the gang.
After the death of Lawrence, rigorous investigations were conducted, and there were several campaigns from Lawrence’s family, with former South African leader Nelson Mandela adding his voice to bring his killers to book.
David Norris, son of a wealthy drug baron, was among the five-member gang named to be Lawrence’s killers. After the back and forth on the cry for justice for Lawrence’s murder, finally, in January 2012, David Norris and his partner Gary Dobson were charged and sentenced to life imprisonment for the cold killing of Stephen Lawrence. David before killing Lawrence had made several racist comments, insinuating he hated black people.
David Norris is currently in prison, serving his 14 years and 3 months sentence. Before the murder of Lawrence, David has launched several attacks on black people with his gang.
