Boeing released an announcement saying that it has fired its chief executive officer Dennis who was unable to stabilize the company after two crashes involving its best-selling 737 Max plane that killed 346 people and set off the worst crisis in the manufacturing of giant’s 103-year history.

The Boeing planes have been grounded by regulators since March, and the company and its airline customers lost billions of dollars. The Boeing Company has faced a series of delays as it tries to fix the Max, and the jetliner’s return to the air remains months away at best.

His performance during the crisis angered lawmakers, airlines, regulators and victims’ families. He has is repeatedly known to have made an overly optimistic projection about the plane that would be allowed to fly again. That created chaos for airlines, which had to cancel thousands of flights.

Dennis Muilenburg 737 Max

The company’s board of directors has fired CEO Dennis Muilenburg, whose tenure at the firm has covered the years leading up to a pair of fatal crashes involving the 737 MAX aircraft. Aviation authorities around the world have grounded the plane, and ongoing investigations suggest Boeing may have cut corners in testing and regulatory oversight.

At the same time, the company has seen numerous delays in the development of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. In October 2018 Boeing failed to address the 737 MAX issue ever since the first fatal crash. A second crash in March of this year led to the grounding of all 737 Max aircraft. In the first Indonesian and second Ethiopian crash, a total of 346 people died.

MCAS has been implicated in both crashes, and regulators haven’t signed off on proposed software changes aimed at getting the planes in the air again. In fact, the FAA took the unusual step of publicly chastising for pushing to get the planes recertified so quickly. The agency may have been looking to distance itself from the company after accusations that it allowed Boeing to do too much safety testing on its own terms.

U.S. airlines have canceled thousands of flights and pushed back the date they expect to begin flying the Max into April, and Boeing is still waiting for regulators to approve its fix for flight control software investigators found to be a factor in both crashes. Last week, Boeing announced it would temporarily suspend production of the 737 Max, a move that will affect 900 companies that make engines, bodies and other parts for the Max.
