Lewis Strauss had two sons with his wife, Alice Hanauer. Regrettably, none of their sons survived childhood.
While in New York, the couple lived on Central Park West, then on the Upper East Side, and finally on Central Park South.
Beginning in June 1950, Strauss was hired as a financial adviser to the Rockefeller brothers, where he was expected to participate in project, financing, and investment decisions.
Strauss, on the other hand, felt the brothers treated him as a second-class asset, and as a result, he felt no loyalty to them.
During this time, Strauss maintained an interest in atomic affairs; like other former AEC members, he had a consulting agreement with the United States Congress Joint Committee on Atomic Energy and was active in voicing his opinion on a variety of issues.
President Eisenhower appointed Strauss as his presidential atomic energy advisor in January 1953.
The AEC was then named chairman by Eisenhower in July 1953.
Strauss became hostile to Oppenheimer, the physicist who had been director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project and who had become a celebrated public figure and remained influential in atomic energy after the war.
