Micah Christenson 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship

The USA shut out Bulgaria in their second game at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022 in Katowice on Sunday, and it was a great team victory.

One man, though, stood out as a true team captain and an all-around athlete. Even though he was only present for the game’s opening two sets, captain Micah Christenson was.

With a one-person kill block in the first rally, Christenson started the match and set the tone for his team’s dominance on the road to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) victory that made the United States at the top of Pool C standings and all but guaranteed them a spot in the Round of 16.

The co-hosts and USA will have secured their spots in the World Championship’s knockout Round if home favorites Poland upset underdogs Mexico in the other pool match later on Sunday. The 29-year-old playmaker’s most vital skill on the court is setting up the American spikers, and the game against Bulgaria was no exception.

The setter was able to generate many opportunities on offense, which resulted in an overall success rate of 48% in attack, even though the reception was likely the team’s weakest component and the only one they performed below the level of their opponents in this game.

Micah himself made arguments for each of the three points. Most importantly, his four items, three of which were one-person blocks, impressed me. Along with the middle of Bulgaria, Aleks Grozdanov, who also scored four times in blocking, was the most significant blocker of the game with that total.

Even though he was only on the court for the first two sets of the match and was a setter, the 1.98m-tall playmaker shone with points from a significant hit on two in the first set and a brilliant ace in the second set to total a match total of six points, making him the team’s fourth-best scorer of the game.

Without guessing why Christenson was replaced for the third set, it is safe to say that it was not because he did not have a good game. Hopefully, it wasn’t a health problem but rather an opportunity for him to rest and conserve energy before Tuesday’s crucial match against Poland.

He did not rest. Even though he was on the sidelines, Micah continued to be an active team captain, cheering on his teammates during rallies and even giving inspirational speeches during timeouts.

Additionally, it likely had something to do with the tenacity the Americans displayed in the crucial third set when they faced three set chances from the Bulgarians and answered by scoring five straight games to win the game in three stages despite facing three set points themselves.

Since 2013, Christenson has competed for the US national team. He won three Volleyball Nations League medals, two FIVB Volleyball World League medals, including a 2015 trophy, an Olympic silver in 2016, a World Championship bronze in 2018, two medals at the FIVB Volleyball World Cup, including a gold in 2015, and two medals at the FIVB Volleyball World Cup.

He was recognized on the Dream Team as the Best Setter of the Tournament on five occasions, including the final World Championship, the last two World Cups, and the 2022 and 2019 editions of the VNL.

Micah Christenson Career To The Date

Christenson, who graduated in 2011, played basketball and volleyball at Kamehameha Schools Kaplama in Honolulu.

He participated in six state championship games and helped his teams win three state championships (basketball between 2009 and 2011 and volleyball in 2011). He played for the USC Trojans men’s volleyball team as a student at the University of Southern California. He competed in the FIVB 2009 Boy’s Youth World Championship in Italy and the 2010 NORCECA Junior Championship in Canada as a starter for the United States Junior National Team.

He competed for the United States Junior National Team in Brazil in 2011 in the FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship, where they finished fourth. He led the Americans as their captain. At the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship in Colorado Springs, the Junior National Team will take home the gold medal.

Additionally, in 2013, he participated in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. He earned the gold medal at the Florence, Italy-hosted World League in 2014. At age 20, he started competing at the senior level. He is the earliest starting setter to have ever represented the United States on a national team at both junior and senior levels.

He was a Cucine Lube Civitanova club squad member that won the 2016–2017 Superliga, Italy’s highest title. He agreed to a two-year contract to play for Russian club Zenit Kazan beginning in 2021. Kazan won the inaugural season of the Russian SuperLeague by just losing once throughout the 2020 season, which occurred in their opening game against Dynamo Moscow.
