No, Furlong is not a farmer, although he hails from an agricultural family in the County Wexford parish of Horeswood. At New Ross RFC in County Wexford, he began his rugby career as a young player.
Furlong also participated in hurling and gaelic football at Horeswood, where Jimmy Furlong served as his coach.
