Rzeznik began his career with a fellow musician called Robby Takac, who was his friend and later the co-founder of the Goo Goo Dolls rock band. Shortly after their band was formed, Rzeznik and Takac had a difficult time making any headway within the music circle.
Later on, John was signed to the French/American record brand Celluloid Records in 1985. However, John never rose to fame for consecutive nine years. His band rose to fame after John wrote the soundtrack and song of the 1998 romantic fantasy movie, City of Angels.
