Lauren Smith-Fields, 23, died after a man she met online recently called police on Dec. 12 to claim he awoke to find her lifeless.
Smith-Field family claims that police never informed them of her death, which they found out about more than a day later when her landlord left a message on her apartment door.

Smith-Fields died of “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine, and alcohol,” according to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner. The cause of death was determined to be accidental.
After the medical examiner’s report, the Bridgeport Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Division initiated a criminal investigation, the department stated later Tuesday.
Lauren Quinique Smith-Fields was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on January 23, 1998, to Shantell Fields and Everett Smith. Lauren attended Stamford High School in Stamford, Connecticut. Her ambition was to become a Physical Therapist, and she was currently enrolled at Norwalk Community College.
