Leon Tim Draisaitl, born October 27, 1995, is a German professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers (NHL). Draisaitl grew up playing hockey in Germany before being drafted second overall by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2012 CHL Import Draft. After two seasons with the Raiders, he was selected third overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.
Draisaitl became the first German player to win the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading point scorer, the Hart Memorial Trophy as regular season MVP, and the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s most outstanding player in 2020.
Draisaitl is the son of former German national team player Peter Draisaitl, who played in 146 games for West Germany and Germany, including the World Championships, the World Cup, and the Nagano Olympic Winter Games in 1988, 1992, and 1998.
Draisaitl represents Germany on a global scale. He captained the German junior team at the World Junior Championships in 2013 and 2014. In the 2014 tournament, he was ejected from a round-robin game against the United States after committing a hit from behind, and he was later given a one-game suspension.
