Mark Stephen Shields was a political columnist and pundit in the United States. He was a key figure in the election campaigns of several Democratic politicians.
From 1988 through 2020, Shields contributed weekly political analysis and commentary to the PBS NewsHour. Shields spent 17 years on CNN’s Capital Gang as a moderator and panellist.
He covered 12 presidential campaigns and 24 national party conventions over his career. In 1979, Shields joined The Washington Post as an editorial writer. In the same year, he started writing a column for Creators Syndicate, which is now distributed nationally.
Shields was the author of On the Campaign Trail, about the 1984 presidential campaign. He was a fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government.
Mark taught US politics and the press at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
