Nik Turner was a British musician and member of space rock pioneers Hawkwind, renowned for his intriguing stagecraft.
He was a skilled saxophone and flue player known for his experimental free jazz stylisations.
He made a mark on all those who watched him perform with his intriguing stagecraft which saw him often wearing full makeup and Ancient Egypt-inspired costumes.
Turner joined Hawkwind in 1969 and remained with them until 1976, rejoining between 1982 and 1984.
After his exit, he founded his own bands Nik Turner’s Sphynx, followed by Inner City Unit, then Nik Turner’s Fantastic All Stars in the late 1980s.
He went on to create the Hawkwind offshoot band Space Ritual in the 2000s and then Nik Turner’s Hawkwind.
He died on Nov. 10, 2022 at age 82.
