Olivier Giroud scored the only goal in AC Milan’s 1-0 win over Napoli on Sunday, firing his team to the top of the Serie A race. Thanks to Olivier Giroud’s second-half goal, AC Milan rose to the top of Serie A with a 1-0 win away at Napoli on Sunday.
Three minutes after halftime, Giroud diverted home a wayward shot at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to put Milan two points ahead of Inter Milan’s local rivals.

Champions Inter, who have a game in hand, had taken the lead with a 5-0 thumping of Salernitana on Friday but are currently in second place, a point ahead of Napoli. The Frenchman’s eighth league goal came on an eventful night for the 35-year-old, as it was his first away from the San Siro since signing from Chelsea in the summer.

“I always try to do my job when I’m in the area, to be in the right place at the right time,” Giroud told DAZN.
“I don’t want to talk about the Scudetto right now but we’re hoping to win something this year. We’re ambitious and we’ll fight to the end.”

Milan, who last won the league in 2011, is two points ahead of defending champion Inter Milan, who has played one fewer match, and three points ahead of Napoli, who is third.
Last month, the 35-year-old Giroud, who signed from Chelsea in the winter, scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Inter.
“We wanted to bring in players of substance, players who had already won something, players who knew what it meant to work hard to win,” Stefano Pioli, Milan’s coach, commented.
“It just took a video call with Olivier for us all to realize what a great professional, what a great person we had in front of us.
“It’s important to have players with experience, professionalism and personality, especially seeing as we are still a young squad. So our aim was to insert players of a high level: technically, tactically and morally. Olivier is all of that.”
Juventus is seven points behind Milan and overcame Spezia 1-0 to keep its slender title aspirations alive.

Before the game, the focus was on the comeback of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had been out with an Achilles injury since January.

However, another veteran took center stage instead. Giroud broke the deadlock four minutes after the restart after a first-half that was high on entertainment but low on scoring chances.
