Released: Why was Aras Amiri Jailed In Iran? Meet British Council Employee

Aras Amiri has been released from detention in Evin prison and has returned to the UK. She was accused of spying by Iran in 2018 while she was visiting Tehran.

Amiri worked for the British Council as an artistic officer and worked in the arts program supporting a greater understanding and appreciation of Iranian culture in the UK. While she was visiting her relatives in 2018, she was detained in Tehran.

In May 2019, she was sentenced to 10 years on spying charges because she refused to become an informant for IIS( Iran’s Intelligence Service). Three months after she was sentenced, she lost an appeal.

Many British-Iranian nationals have been jailed in Iran since tensions grew with Western forces. One of the persons who were arrested on similar charges was Thomson Reuters Foundation worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
