Ronald Radford, an English footballer best known for scoring a screamer in the 1971–72 FA Cup for Hereford United during their shock 2–1 giant-killing of Newcastle United had an estimated net worth of $2 million at tme of death.
Born on 12 July 1943 in South Elmsall, West Riding of Yorkshire, Radford passed away on Nov. 2, 2022 at age 79.
Radford’s career started at Sheffield Wednesday in 1961. He went on to play for Leeds and Cheltenham before turning out for Rugby Town, Newport and Hereford – where he etched his name into history.
During a third-round replay against Newcastle at Edgar Street stadium – the home of Hereford – Radford had latched onto a flick-on before hammering a first-time thunderbolt into the roof of the net, flying past keeper Willie McFaul.
Legendary football commentator John Motson’s words have since become synonymous with the goal.
“Oh, what a goal! What a goal!’ He cried. ‘Radford the scorer… and the crowd are invading the pitch.’
Substitute Ricky George scored the winner as Hereford became the first non-league club to defeat a top-flight side since 1949.
Newcastle United paid their own tribute, saying via Twitter: “Though against us, a goal forever written into FA Cup folklore. Rest in peace, Ronnie.”
Newport county, one of his former clubs also eulogized him, writing;
‘The thoughts of #NCAFC are with the family and loved ones of former County player, Ronnie Radford. RIP, Ronnie.’
