Ruby Bridges Quotes

Don’t follow the path. Go where there is no path and begin the trail. When you start a new trail equipped with courage, strength and conviction, the only thing that can stop you is you!Racism is a grown-up disease and we must stop using our children to spread it.My message is really that racism has no place in the hearts and minds of our children.I now know that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the guidance of the spirit within us, we will probably find that the purpose is a good one.Kids know nothing about racism. They’re taught that by adults.

“I think it’s fair to say that if it hadn’t been for you guys, I might not be here and we wouldn’t be looking at this together”

Bridges formed the Ruby Bridges Foundation in 1999 to promote “the values of  respect, tolerance, and appreciation of all differences”.

Ruby Bridges Education and Story

When Ruby’s family moved to New Orleans, Lousiana, they received a request two years later from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to consider their child Ruby to participate in the integration of the New Orleans school system. Many white people at that time did not agree with the government to integrate the African – American children to white schools.

The violence occurred as a result which forced the government to enforce troops to escort the first nine children known as Little Rock Nine while joining Little Rock Central High School in 1957. As a result of this, some schools administered an entrance exam so that black people could fail and not attend the schools.

Luckily for Bridges, she was among the six black children to pass the entrance exam. Bridges joined the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, three of them joined  McDonogh No. 19 while two children decided to remain at their old schools. Bridges’ father was not fully agreeing with the idea of her eldest daughter being the only African- American in a white school. Her mother talked him into agreeing that idea later.

On the first day of Ruby’s enrollment at William Frantz Elementary School, Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals since white parents began protesting. As she was walking, people were shouting and throwing things at them but she showed a lot of courage and walked past them.

As soon as she entered the school, white parents took their children and all the teachers refused to teach Ruby except for one teacher called Barbara Henry, That day, it was chaos which forced her to remain in the principal’s office. After a few days, some white parents began taking their children to school as the protests began to subside.

Although some white parents had already agreed to let their children learn with a black child, some kept threatening that they would put poison in her food which forced her to only eat food from home. She was taught alone for almost a year with Barbara Henry.

Ruby’s parents also suffered as a result of her joining the William Frantz Elementary School. Her father lost his job as a gas station attendant, nobody wanted to sell groceries to them, the land where her grandparents sharecropped was taken from them and her parents eventually separated. Sooner her community began showing love to her family as her father was offered a new job and others watched their house and escorted her to school with the federal marshalls to protect them from the protestors.
