Thomas was born in Sydney, New South Wales, to an Indigenous Australian family (Kamilaroi and Lumaranatana). After playing rugby league as a child, he was identified as having potential as a junior fullback, which led to his joining the Penrith Panthers development team.
When Thomas was 12 years old, his family relocated to Launceston, Tasmania, and he began playing Australian rules football for the Prospect Hawks and later the North Launceston Bombers.
When he won the best under-16 and under-18 player awards at their respective national championships in the same year in 2016, he created history. Thomas was a member of North’s Next Generation Academy and was selected by North Melbourne with their first pick and eighth overall in the 2018 national draft (NGA). He graduated from Launceston’s St. Patrick’s College.
