Thousands of Britons suffer from painful complications due to the “Turkey teeth” dental trend, which involves traveling abroad for drastic cost-cutting treatment.

This latest cosmetic craze has some big names, such as celebrities like Katie Price and Love Island’s Jack Fincham. Basically, it involves filing teeth down to pegs and replacing them with crowns or veneers.

While the recent trend has been followed by many and viewed by millions, the procedure is said to give patients a Hollywood smile and is being promoted on social media with the hashtag #Turkeyteeth. Read further for the full detail.

This Is Why “Turkey Teeth” TikTok Trend Is Dangerous, And You Should Stay Away From It

The cosmetic procedure known as Turkey Teeth has become a huge trend across social media platforms, with the hashtag having more than 130 million views on TikTok. But how did this trend start?

It all began with a woman who traveled to Turkey to have her teeth fixed, and she shared on her TikTok account that it was the biggest mistake of her life.

The woman named Lisa Martyn used the platform to express her pain and to encourage others to do their research and think twice before undergoing treatment.

In detail, Lisa flew to Turkey last year for 26 veneers, thin shells placed around teeth that have been minimally shaved down, hoping to achieve a perfect smile for her son’s wedding. She found out months later that she had been given crowns.

Her dental procedure in Turkey involved filing down 60-70% of the natural tooth to fangs or stubs before gluing a tooth cap.

She later told BBC that her teeth “are gone,” necessitating long-term treatment or dentures. However, when BBC attempted to contact Lisa’s clinic in Turkey, they received no response.

UK Dentists Warns About This Challenge

The procedure is most commonly performed in Turkey, where many travels to get a new set of teeth. Nevertheless, 60-70% of patients’ natural teeth are filed down to fangs or stubs to get the new teeth.

This is before a tooth cap is glued on top, of which the patient can select the shape, material, and color, with the majority preferring a bright white symmetrical smile.

After her dental treatment in Turkey, Lisa has been plagued by ongoing nerve sensitivity and extreme pain for the past ten months. As a result, she has lost around 12.7kg because she could not eat properly and has been dependent on painkillers for months.

She claims that the pain culminated in an infection and abscess that nearly paralyzed half of her face. While the original procedure in Turkey cost her 3,500 euros, her private corrective treatment, including two rounds of root canal surgery, will set her back more than 2,000 euros.

Following this incident, UK dentists warn people about the risks by hearing stories about patients’ teeth dying/rotting and excruciating pain. In some cases, people receive crowns instead of veneers.

They have further warned people about the risks of traveling abroad to get a new smile, or everyone might have to experience something like Lisa.
