Vida Blue passed away on May 6, 2023. He was 73. Blue died in a hospital in San Francisco’s East Bay of medical complications related to cancer caused by his drug problems.

After going 24-8 with a 1.82 ERA and 301 strikeouts in 24 complete games, eight of which were shutouts, Blue was named the American League Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player in 1971.

In his rookie season in 1971, he was an unstoppable fastball pitcher.

He was 22 when he won MVP, making him the youngest winner of the award. He is one of only 11 pitchers to have won the MVP and Cy Young awards in the same season.

Blue used to play baseball and football with his friends when he was younger. He was a good athlete who could throw a baseball very hard even when he was young.

Blue’s pitching ability drew the attention of scouts, including Ray Swallow of the Kansas City A’s.

In his 2011 autobiography, “Vida Blue: A Life,” Blue suggested that he had struggled with substance abuse for many years. “Along with all the glory that I’d achieved, there was a growing darkness reaching for me,” he wrote. “And the light began to dim as early as 1972.”
