“Vince” Lombardi was an American football player， coach， and executive who was born on June 11， 1913， and died on September 3， 1970， in New York City. For much of the 1960s， he was best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers， who he guided to three consecutive and five total National Football League championships in seven years. Among those victories were the first two Super Bowls， which occurred following each of the teams’ respective NFL seasons in 1966 and 1967. Lombardi is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most successful coaches in the history of the National Football League.
In his honour， the National Football League’s Super Bowl trophy was named after him. 1971 was the year that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He started his coaching career as an assistant at St. Cecilia High School， and eventually rose to the position of head coach. Former assistant coach at Fordham University， the United States Military Academy， and the New York Giants， he went on to become the Green Bay Packers’ and Washington Redskins’ head coach from 1959 to 1967， and then the Washington Redskins’ head coach from 1969 to 1990.
A winning percentage of 73.8 percent (96–34–6) was achieved during the regular season， and 90 percent (9–1) was achieved during the playoffs， giving him a total record of 105 victories， 35 defeats， and six ties in the NFL during his tenure as a head coach.
