Hilary Mantel, the British author who twice won the Booker Prize, has died at the age of 70, according to HarperCollins, her publisher.

What caused Hilary Mantel’s death? HarperCollins said Hilary Mantel (born Hilary Mary Thompson) died “suddenly yet peacefully” on Thursday (Sept. 22), surrounded by family and friends, after suffering a stroke.

In a statement, her publisher said:

“We are heartbroken at the death of our beloved author, Dame Hilary Mantel.

“Our thoughts are with her friends and family, especially her husband, Gerald.

“This is a devastating loss and we can only be grateful she left us with such a magnificent body of work.”

Mantel was best known for her “Wolf Hall” trilogy, a series of best-selling novels set amid the political turmoil of 16th-century England, for which she twice won the Man Booker Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards.

The third instalment of the Cromwell trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, was longlisted for the same prize.
