According to police, Simpson, 20, admitted to shooting Sims in the head. Then he was taken to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $350,000 bond, as his decisions last week threaten to define the rest of his life.

Simpson’s criminal history includes only one prior arrest: a misdemeanor summons in Baker for violating curfew during the 2016 floods. Simpson did not appear to be on the radar of local law enforcement as a potential troublemaker until he was named as a suspect in Sims’ death.
