Stefan Banach was a Polish mathematician who is often regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most prominent and influential mathematicians. He founded contemporary functional analysis and was a founding member of the Lwow School of Mathematics.

His most important contribution was the book Theorie des operations lineaires (Theory of Linear Operations), published in 1932, which was the first monograph on the comprehensive theory of functional analysis.

Banach’s thesis, published in 1922, explicitly axiomatized the idea of a full normed vector space and established the groundwork for the field of functional analysis.

Stefan Banach was born in Krakow, Poland, in 1892, under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He never met his mom, and his dad had him reared by relatives in the city.

Due to his eyesight problems, he was considered ineligible for military duty during World War I, so he lectured at local schools.

Banach was always good at math, and he used to find solutions with his best buddy, Witold Wikosz, who went on to become a prominent mathematician during breaks and after school.

He was hired at Lvov Technical University after releasing mathematical articles he collaborated on in his leisure time. He was a mathematician and professor who was mainly self-taught.
