In 1978, Al-Zawahiri married Azza Ahmed Newari, a philosophy major at Cairo University. The wedding was held at the Continental Hotel on Opera Square in a private ceremony.
With his wife, Azza, Al-Zawahiri had a son, Mohammed, as well as four daughters, Fatima (born in 1981), Umayma (born in 1983), Nabila (born in 1986), and Khadiga (born in 1987).
In a US airstrike on Afghanistan in late December 2001, after the September 11 attacks on the United States, Azza, his first wife, and two of their six children, Mohammad and Aisha, were killed. After she died in 2001, he married Umaima Hassan.
Additionally, he has a maternal connection to the House of Saud through his wife, Muna, who is married to Mohammed bin Faisal Al Saud, the late king Faisal’s son. Muna is the daughter of Azzam Pasha, his maternal great-uncle.
