Judd Apatow was born to his parents, Maury Apatow and Tamara Shad. His father is a real-estate developer, and his mother operated the music company Mainstream Records, which her father, Bob Shad, started.
They have three children, Judd, Mia, and Robert. Mia is his younger sister, and Robert is his older brother.
His parents split when he was 12 years old. Mia moved in with her mother, while Robert went to live with his maternal grandparents. Apatow spent most of his childhood with his father and only visited his mother on weekends.
Judd Apatow was introduced to live stand-up comedy by his mother, who worked at a comedy club for a summer.
As a youngster, Apatow was fascinated with humor, idolizing Steve Martin, Bill Cosby, and the Marx Brothers. Apatow started his career as a comedian by washing dishes at the Long Island East Side Comedy Club.
His parents’ divorce left him emotionally damaged as a child, and his rage over their split became a frequent theme in his later work.
