Reflecting on his family background, Winslow grew up in a tiny seaside Rhode Island village, the son of a sailor and a librarian with a passion for reading and stories.
Reportedly, Don’s father brought him to the fishing facility where he grew up in Rhode Island, warning him that he’d end up shoveling fish guts there if he didn’t study.
At the age of seventeen, Don left to study journalism at the University of Nebraska, where he got a bachelor’s degree in African Studies. He visited southern Africa while in college, which sparked a lifetime fascination with the region.
