Dewey Franklin Trigg III, an American retired mixed martial artist, pro wrestler, MMA referee, color commentator, and TV personality, was born on May 7, 1972. In addition to the UFC, Pride Fighting Championships, Rumble on the Rock, Icon Sport (where he held the title of middleweight champion), BAMMA, World Fighting Alliance, and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Trigg has competed in professional wrestling.
Trigg began judo training in 1995 with Sensei and former Olympian Patrick Burris. Trigg earned his first black belt and was introduced to the world of Mixed Martial Arts while training with Burris.
Trigg, a high school state champion in his home state of New York, wrestled as a walk-on at Oklahoma State before transferring to Phoenix College. After finishing second in the NJCAA championships, he was recruited by Oklahoma, OSU’s archrival. Trigg stayed on as an assistant coach for the Sooners after earning his bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs and Administration from OU in 1997.
Frustrated with his position in the US wrestling pecking order, he began a professional MMA career, using his purses to pay for flights to international freestyle wrestling tournaments.
Trigg defeated Fabiano Iha via TKO due to strikes at Pride 8 in Japan in 1999. Trigg qualified for the Olympic Trials in wrestling less than a year later, in early 2000.
